The Jennings Young gallery in the J.S. McLean Centre for Indigenous & Canadian Art is a place for storytelling. Storytelling is a central aspect of many cultures, a way to introduce new ideas, teach ways of being, record history, interpret events and understand the world.

Nyle Miigizi Johnston’s Diiyah Muh’gaanag (Our First Family) is a collection of images of spiritual beings, plants and animals based on Anishinaabe teachings. Drawn in a pictographic style, they tell stories of botany, astrology and the interconnectedness of all living things.

Oakville Art in the Park August 6th

Need an excuse to get outside? Check out this great collection of artists! Its the 53rd annual Art in the Park in Oakville; this year it is featuring over 175 artist from across the country.

Every medium is represented, from traditional oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings to glass, ceramics, photography, mixed media, sculptures and fine jewellery.

Visitors will get to meet the artists and learn about the works they have created.

Located at Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park,
Bronte Road and Ontario Street

Neanderthals were Artists?

It is often thought that our Neanderthal ancestors were just uncultured brutes. However, a recent discovery suggests that they had the ability to think creatively – much like modern day artist.
Cave paintings, recently found in Spain, dating back over 64,000 years, depict animals, geometric patterns and hand stencils and engravings. These works of art suggest the ability to think symbolically.

$5 Million Art Fraud

The Phi Centre in Montreal is a multidisciplinary arts and culture organization that explores all aspects of creation and development. Founded in 2012, the Centre is dedicated to art in all its forms, apparently including the art of the ‘con’.

A suit was recently filed with the Quebec Superior Court, claiming that the Phi Centre’s former president defrauded it and the founder (Phoebe Greenberg) of $5 million. Follow the link to this interesting article written by Leah Sandals.
